We are pleased to offer a workshop by Dr. Ruth Alperson entitled Dalcroze Eurhythmics: Ideas Into Action, Action Into Ideas. The workshop will include a body warmup, eurhythmics, solfege, a children's demonstration, and an improvisation session. The workshop is designed to improve your musicianship, to give you studio and classroom ideas, and to help you find ways to put those ideas into effective practice. You'll come away from the session with renewed confidence and a wealth of new tools for teaching and communicating music to students.
Dr. Ruth Alperson is Dean of The Hoff-Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale, New York, where she directs the Dalcroze Teacher Training Program. Dr. Alperson is on the faculty of the Diller-Quaile School of Music, where she teaches a graduate course in Dalcroze methodology. She was former faculty member of New York University, the Manhattan School of Music, and L’Université Laval, in Quebec City, Canada.
She holds a B.A. in Music from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. in Arts and Humanities from New York University. Her doctoral dissertation is entitled, A Qualitative Study of Dalcroze Eurhythmics Classes for Adults. Dr. Alperson earned the License from The Dalcroze Teachers Training Course, in London, England, and the Diplôme from L'Institut Jaques-Dalcroze, in Geneva, Switzerland. She has presented Dalcroze workshops in colleges and universities throughout the U.S., and countries abroad, including Canada, England, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Switzerland, and The Dominican Republic. Dr. Alperson is a pianist, and active chamber music recitalist. She is a member of the Board of Directors of The Chamber Music Conference and Composers Forum of the East, at Bennington College.

Workshop: A Potpourri of Movement

We are pleased to present A Potpourri of Movement, a workshop offering a variety of short sessions highlighting different ways to bring movement into the music classroom and studio.
Dr. Julia Schnebly-Black will offer a session on Dalcroze Eurhythmics, drawing on her vast experience to help students move with fluidity and to sense rhythm more deeply.
Gretta Harley will present a session on Dramatic Movement. She says, "Rhythm is all around us, not just in 'music.' We will explore various rhythms in our environment, the written word, and then transcribe this exploration into music, using our bodies as percussive instruments."
Matti Mero will lead a session on Contra-dancing. Contra dance is a called dance form but with high “interpretability space” so people of all skill and energy levels can join in. Matti will give his take on the flavor and spirit of modern contra, which has evolved and “opened” in recent decades. "Adapt To Every Person You Dance With, and Seek The Joy Of Sharing, and Contribute Your Zest!"
Julia Schnebly-Black has earned the Dalcroze Certificate and License from Carnegie-Mellon U. under Marta Sanchez; B.Mus, Peabody Conservatory, M.Mus, Yale University., Ph.D., University of Washington. She has presented sessions at national and international conferences. In addition to private teaching she conducts classes at the Seattle Conservatory of Music for children from three years to high school age. She is the founder and director of Dalcroze NW, a Summer program at the University of Washington, and advisor to the Northwest Chapter of the Dalcroze Society of America. Julia is co-author of two books with Dr. Stephen Moore.
Gretta Harley is a composer, performer and music educator residing in Seattle, WA. She works in many modalities, including classical/concert, pop/rock, electronic music and music for theatre.
Matti Mero has been contra dancing since 1991, and calling, playing, and writing tunes for contras since 1995. He has organized several contra bands and calling, dancing, and music workshops.
